well-traveled little jerk that i am...

artists generally enter the tla through the rear entrance
at kater street (the creepy little alleyway behind the
venue).  i don't think they really like people hanging out
there, but the other good news is that the tla usually have
artist meet'n'greets for the headliners, which you can
attend by purchasing a copy of the album.

as for the 9:30 club, the back door is a good idea there
too.  it's the only one and it empties right out onto the
street so if you get there early enough you should be fine.
 the 9:30 is one of the greatest venues in the entire
country <3
