well it depends how long you can travel here. if you have a lot of
time i highly suggest you these cities, for their historical and
artistic importance: roma, firenze, milano, napoli, venezia.
in treviso (north-east) i think there's currently a van gogh gallery:
you should check google for this.
if you like beaches and 'shifting sands' i think the whole tirrenic coast is
amazing (liguria, toscana, calabria above all). sicilia and sardegna
are a pure dream. if you are more into mountains, go for trentino. or
also abruzzo has beautiful parks and nature (that park in abruzzo it's
called 'parco del gran sasso d'italia'). these are just the main
things, but almost every city in italy has its own beautiness and
different traditions. oh, like shirley once said on her diary, don't
miss toscana's hills, and have a good chianti wine. if you need more
tips just ask! oh, and for the garbage-stuff question: i dunno where
you can exactly find some goodies, cause i live in a small town, but
i'd suggest milano or roma aswell for that kind of things..
there're some cool shops there, like virgin megastore or ricordi.

have fun!
