[Trash-talk] abandoned pools opinion on Garbage and their audience

"DMG: That's actually funny that you mention that because I first saw you
guys when you opened for Garbage at Bronco Bowl and that happened to them.
Their whole computer system went down. All of their samples and pre-recorded
tracks were gone and they didn't know what to do. It was amazing how much
wasn't actually being played live.

TW: It was awesome. It was as if I had gone behind the curtain and


DMG: (Laughs) Did you go behind the curtain and pull the plug? Was that you?

TW: Yeah, totally. (Laughs)

DMG: They played an acoustic version of "Wild Horses" and then they tried to
fix it, they came back and then it went down again.

TW: Yeah, it was on this one song, "I Will Love You 'Till The Day I Die" or
something and it starts out with vocals, a drum loop, and everything.
Basically their set up is that there are no amps on stage. All the guitars
are on an amp simulator; the drums are muffled so when you hit the drums
it's just triggering something else. The only live mic is Shirley's (Manson,
lead vocalist) and two overheads for the symbols and the rest of the drums
and that's it. If the tracks go down or they lose power, there's not gonna
be any sound. They don't even make feedback! That's my bread and butter just
to hit the distortion pedal and be able to hear that
 (makes a feedback
sound). That's rock! That song starts out with vocals on tape and it was
skipping like
 (imitates skipping sound). I was laughing my ass off. The
rest of the tour, I'd be walking around and as soon as we'd pass their
dressing room, I'd be like
 (makes skipping sound again- laughing). It
happened 3 or 4 times that tour! Play the song normal; you know what I mean?
Well, it makes for a good show sometimes, but I wouldn't want to be that
reliant on it.

DMG: The strange part was that the audience, rather than being shocked, was
just happy the equipment was working again and seemed to not even realize
what was going on. Shirley was just like 'Sorry, all the stuff broke down.'
It was like a total Milli Vanilli moment.

TW: What's going on with audiences these days? Let's talk about that for a
second. Like if tracks go down people should go 'Hey, wait a minute, they're
not playing. What a rip-off!' but no, they're like 'Okay Shirley, whenever
you're ready- we'll still be here!' You know, those audiences
let's talk
about Garbage audiences some more because I am self-aware enough and I'm
aware of my band. I've been doing this long enough to know if we suck or
not. If we suck, I'll be the first to tell everybody. So we do a lot of
those Garbage shows and the front row, they'll all get excited and they'll
all get up there early. They're not really music fans, though; they're
Shirley fans. So when we're on stage, we're not Abandoned Pools, we're just
not Shirley, basically. That was kind of a drag to go out there and have a
good set and just have people staring at us like, 'Where's Shirley?' I feel
like a lot of fans these days aren't really "music fans". That thing that
was going on like '92 or '96-7 maybe? Those sort of fans are becoming more
and more scarce. People that would listen to things to know what's going on
with the Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana and also know what's going on with DJ
Shadow when Entroducing came out in '96 and Radiohead came out with OK
Computer in '97. They would listen to all that stuff. I think fans now are
more about persona and flash. Maybe it's because they just don't know, or
it's just some sort of a phase or something. Maybe it's just a difference of
preference but it certainly doesn't work for me. Audiences right now seem to
be gravitating toward that and that's not what we are so it's sort of a
challenge
