No, movie & book are very different. It's really another pace..
And you will not be tired, of course if you want to read it for one
day.. then probably :)

And "The Hobbit" will be useful too, it's very (even too easy) easy
reading, but it's good foreword, which explain some things. For
example, 'The Hobbit' in more detail describes episode with Gollum (or
Annete? ;)) than the beginning of first movie. Movie, in spite of
length, is very compressed. I don't know how it feels to see movie
if you didn't read the book, but I suppose it's not very
understandable sometimes.

As wrote Frank, you could also try to read Silmarillion. It's
really hard to read because of many unusual names and because of
style of narrative, but it's some kinda chronicles of Middle-Earth,
very detailed history from first days of Tolkien's world.
