I believe I have seen the future, and it's spelled Franz Ferdinand. Ok
maybe a little overly dramatic, but after the performance they put on last
night you'll just have to forgive me. Playing the second of two sold out
L.A. area engagements, FF absolutely tore up the stage at the Wiltern
Theatre. I was in a pissed off mood when they came out b/c I had just
watched the Lakers get their asses handed to them, but less than ten
minutes later I had forgotten all about it. The Scottish quartet mixes
quite a few styles, including '70s guitar rock, '70 disco and funk, and
early '80s new wave. The crowd was as excited and energetic as any I've
seen in a while. Unlike the Yeah Yeah Yeahs show I had seen recently at
the Henry Fonda where 90% of the sold out KROQ audience was just waiting
around for Maps, these kids knew every fucking lyric to every fucking song
on the entire FF album. The band was quite obviously amused by all this. A
couple months ago they were playing the Troubadour, and shortly before that
they were practically unknown around here except for some European reviews.
Now here they were selling out two good sized venues in L.A. and actually
getting the usually laid back audience to dance like it was 1978. Their
faces all seemed to have the same expression: "Holy fucking shit!" And the
girls in the audience couldn't care less that the band's two frontmen were
obviously gay, as they shrieked and howled whenever one of them would come
near. I believe the band played their entire album plus a couple other
songs. They sounded excellent and had tremendous energy throughout the set.
My only annoyance is with myself for not going to both shows. I won't make
that mistake again.

**** out of ****
