They fixed up the old Hollywood Palace, put in a new sound system, and it's now the Avalon. Apparently they were still finishing the inside as of Monday's opening night, and at last night's show you could still smell the fresh paint. Mmm. :) It's really beautiful now. They are also putting in a new restaurant and another lounge for the A-list celebs so they don't have to get too close to us losers on the floor.

This was my first look at Liz Phair. She's really pretty. She wore a little green mini-dress (see through!), a large white belt, and shiny heels. She looked like she stepped out of a Whiskey go-go dancer cage in 1966. Opening with Polyester Bride and then Rock Me, she pretty much drew equally from all four studio albums. She stuck to the standard versions of everything. She and the band sounded excellent, and there was nary a moment when her big smile left her face. She doesn't do a whole lot on stage except play guitar and sing, and she poked fun of herself saying how LA critics always zing her for that.

The setlist (by album) included 6'1", Help Me Mary, an impromtu Glory, Never Said, Fuck and Run, Girls Girls Girls, Divorce Song, Flower (encore), Supernova, Crater Lake, Big Tall Man, Perfect World, Johnny Feelgood, Polyester Bride, Extraordinary, Why Can't I, Rock Me, Take a Look, and Favorite. There may have been a couple others I forgot about.

The set ran only an hour 15 minutes which I think was a little short.
