nopes your questions arent stupid..

first thing COME TO IRELAND. everyone should come to ireland. if they dont
they are really missing out cos they have absolutely no idea how absolutely
fabulous this place is. i love the UK and ireland with all my heart. this is
so wonderful and of course northern ireland is the best place. im very
patriotic in that sense! i love my country! it kicks ass!

anyways - the differences between dublin and belfast. well i love both of
these cities. i have to admit that i would have said that i would preferred
dublin a few years ago but over time and experience i have started to really
appreciate belfast and all the great things in it.

the main difference that you would notice in these two cities is the
architecture... dublin has some great buildings.. very old and majestic. im
afraid i couldnt quite tell you which century or period they come from.
belfast is more "modern" and by modern i mean, its mainly 18th/19th century
architecture and upwards... i mean you can compare i guess just the two main
universities in this respect queens, belfast (www.qub.ac.uk) and trinity,
dublin (www.tcd.ie).

from here on in, i shall not compare the two cities but rather discuss them
seperately okays...

dublin is irish. yes *very* irish. not that thats strange. i mean
considering its in ireland! but its a lot more irish than belfast! and its
hard possibly to explain that to someone who doesnt live here because by
irishness im not referring to guinness and big green hats - its not a
tourism thing, its more an atmospheric thing. the streets are always busy
and the crowds of people are always diverse and interesting. the shops are
good - *love* the shops. you have your normal high street stores on large
scale and then you also have little individual shops and stuff which sell
great music, great clothes, great original things.. some cool markets.. you
just gotta search for it. dublin nightlife also rocks. being a capital, its
strict on ID (so for you underagers like me head for a pub rather than a
club they're always easier!). but the nightlife is great. there are places
that are wild for the students. there are so many places basically, all
different styles - alternative, gay, disco etc etc... the gig venues are
also pretty hot in dublin and i think that the theatre scene isnt bad..
there isnt the kinda variety of musicals that you get in london of course,
but there are always loads of good plays going on in the various little
theatres.. its true ireland is so very *rich* in culture and arts...

there is a lot in this city for the discerning tourist and its nice to walk
around.. the streets are generally based along squares with little green
parks in the middle. traffic sucks ass during the day so walk! there is
loads to do.. it rocks..

BELFAST i love this city so much.. i know it inside out.. i could take you
around blindfolded.. im not really interested in the tourist side.. i mean
yeah ive been up the shankill, the falls.. ive seen the murals etc etc but
*shrugs* yeah its weird.. but thats just... anyways!

belfast is a great city.. it has a nice atmosphere.. its feels friendly.. to
me it feels safe.. it feels like home.. its *my* city... i get excited when
my favourite bands play there because i want them to love it and i want to
be among northern irish people while enjoying the bands i love... its easy
to get around this city.. the main things are pretty close together.. and
anything worth getting to is much less than an hours walking distance from
anything else worth being at!

the shops are great.. also high street stuff.. but then there are special
northern irish high street chains likes dunnes!!! does anyone else know
dunnes?! it kicks ass.. *hehe* but then there are some FABULOUS alternative
stores that i love.. number 1 has to be hectors house which is a great music
collectors store.. now this man is the true example of how lovely northern
irish people are.. hes done some great stuff for me (i once left like an
entire bundle of letters to be stamped and posted somewhere in his shop and
he posted it all for me and paid for it and everything and im like aww - i
mean like yeah id just spent £30 in his shop but still!) also there are
fabulous clothes shops for the femmes et les hommes - CULT is soooooooo damn
cool... girls check it out.. i havent checked out the guy bit but the girls
bit rocks.. its set in a huge warehouse style building.. all metal and
stuff.. with cute paul frank monkey stuff and then little tshirts with
leather cats and polka dot skirts and it ranges from goth to trippy to boho
and i love it.. then there is fresh garbage and casbah - both of these shops
SMELL like dope.. casbah is very hippy with stripey woollen cardigans.. and
fresh garbage is full of expensive dresses made from spiderwebs, awful
hoodies and cute tshirts.. also a fabulous range of spikes! then there is
liberty blue - another alternative shop which is actually set out like a
proper shop (like cult phew) lots of cute tshirts... a character similar to
emily strange but different "im so happy i could die" anyways yeah very
cool... does some very unusual tshirts... loads of cute gay sales
assisstants who are over-friendly.. fab!

okays nightlife is great in belfast.. i think ive nearly been to every pub
because of last week! ha - well yeah during the day no pubs in the centre,
in shaftsbury, on lisburn road, in stranmillis or botanic are out of bounds
i dont think.. at night maybe there are places that i wouldnt recommend..
but yeah there are various different bars and clubs for everyone...

the limelight (a favourite gig venue of mine) also doubles as a club and its
great for sweaty students getting down to rock beats that cannot be danced
to.. its so crowded on student nights where shots are £1 and the place is
packed with "alternatifs!" :P its heavy on ID - even during gigs... you just
gotta learn the tricks of the trade, most of which i have employed by now!
:P

the parliament is the only gay bar i know.. its okays.. very cheesy and not
exactly looking great.. i was scared to go in in case i got shot! but yeah
its fine - bit cheesy and very dark.. very shady.. has a restaurant and club
attached

anyways loads of other clubs and bars that are good.. cutters wharf, the
empire, tatu, milk, the bot, the eg, orpheus, wetherspoons(!), katy dalys,
bar twelve...

belfast also is full of culinary delights.. the restaurants are a treat and
absolutely amazing and lovely.. so yeah.. some fabulisu little places
waiting to be discovered...

belfast rocks in the sun.. the city hall lawns are flooded with people
almost permantently sunny or not.. everyone sits there eating lunch and
sleeping - the botanic gardens are also popular.. this place is buzzing..
its full of students, young people, professionals... its great...

gig venues rock.. unfortunately bands forget about us cos we're out of the
way and because of the past but we rock.. we really know how to riot :P
there are loads of great places for everyone... all different times

also the ice hockey is supposed to be damn cool as well.. its in the
odyssey.. i havent been there recently but supposedly its turned into some
huge american style thing.. ie there are LOADS restaurants all under one
huge roof and there is a cinema and hard rock cafe (ireland first!!!) and a
cool science museum... yeah belfast is full of cool museums as well like the
one at cultra and stuff.. so yeah i love belfast

the only thing that sucks is the trains. and they *really* suck

lou
xx
