From psbfan at geowayne.com Sat Dec 2 22:13:44 2017 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Sat, 2 Dec 2017 22:13:44 -0800 Subject: [Introspective] Final results of final run-off of PSB songs you'd most like to hear them perform live Message-ID: <5cf80a41-6bc1-0139-d5b9-a029784cf376@geowayne.com> The final results are in for my poll of the past week, a "run-off" in which I asked my site visitors to choose (from the songs that had received the most votes in my previous three surveys on this theme) the three Pet Shop Boys songs previously not performed live in concert that they would most like to hear them perform live. And the three songs that received the largest number of votes were: * "I Want to Wake Up," picked by 28.7% of the voters, * "The Resurrectionist," chosen by 24.5%, and * "Miserablism," selected by 23.9%. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. My new poll for the week ahead is most unusual for me. You see, I normally ask your opinion about something that doesn't have any "right" or "wrong" answer; it's strictly a matter of personal viewpoint or "personal truth." But in this case there *is* an objective truth -- we just don't know for sure what it is. One of my regular site visitors recently observed that, at least to his ears, it sounds as if the second time the word "Happiness" is spelled out in the PSB song of that title, it's not Neil doing the spelling but rather Chris. This had never occurred to me before and, to be honest, I've never heard or read anything along these lines anywhere else, including from the PSB camp itself. So I decided that this would make an interesting survey question. In short, what do *you* think? Near the beginning of the song "Happiness" (at about the 0:15 point), do you think it's Chris who spells out the title the second time, or do you think it's still Neil (though perhaps digitally altered in sound). So please take a moment to make register your opinion about this right there on my home page -- although, of course, you'll probably want to listen to the opening of the song a few times before doing so. In the meantime, thanks so much to Gavin for raising this question and inspiring this survey! Thanks as well to everyone who voted in last week's poll! And I wish you all a fantastic week ahead! Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last full day of my current poll, which asks whether you believe it's Chris and not Neil who spells out the title of the Pet Shop Boys' song "Happiness" the second time (and *only* the second time) the spelling takes place in that song, quite near the beginning, as one of my site visitors has suggested. If you haven't voted yet, please take a moment to visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and make your choice from the options provided right there on my home page. On Sunday I will end this poll, post the final results, and launch a new survey for the week ahead. But please note that, because of another commitment, I will probably be a little later than usual -- probably sometime between one and three hours later -- making the switch-over to the new survey this weekend. I hope this doesn't pose any inconvenience. In the meantime, thanks to everyone who has already voted! And I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! Wayne http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm From psbfan at geowayne.com Sat Dec 9 23:59:19 2017 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Sat, 9 Dec 2017 23:59:19 -0800 Subject: [Introspective] Final results of poll on whether Chris spells the second "Happiness" in that song Message-ID: The final results are in for my poll this past week, in which I asked my site visitors whether they believed it's Chris spelling out the title "Happiness" the second time in that song (as opposed to Neil spelling it out every other time). And the response chosen by the largest number of voters was: * "No, I don't think it's Chris. I believe it's still Neil, though perhaps 'digitally altered," picked by 53.2% of the voters. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. As it turns out, the majority of voters was correct. I learned about halfway through this poll, through a very reliable source within the Pet Shop Boys organization, that Neil spells out every instance of the title in "Happiness" -- indeed at times, however, digitally processed. Meanwhile, my new poll for the week ahead is the latest iteration of my "Rating Project," in which I ask my site visitors to rate certain PSB songs on a scale of 0 to 10 as they compare to all other PSB songs -- 0 meaning one of the worst they've ever done, 5 meaning "average for PSB," and 10 meaning one of their very best. This time I'm asking you to rate just four songs recently released with the reissues of the albums "Yes" and "Elysium." So please, when you're ready, take a few moments to make your ratings of these songs right there on my home page. Thanks to everyone who voted in last week's survey! And I hope you all have an outstanding week ahead! Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last full day of my current poll, which is the latest round of my ongoing "Rating Project," in which I ask you to rate Pet Shop Boys songs on a scale of 0 to 10 based on how they compare to all other PSB songs (*not* other artists' recordings). This time around I'm asking you to rate just four previously unrated songs that were released a couple months ago with the reissues of "Yes" and "Elysium." So if you haven't voted yet, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and make your ratings choices right there on my home page. And, from among the four songs rated in this past week's survey, the one that received the highest average rating was: * "In Slow Motion," which received an average voter rating of 6.688 out of 10. It's also worth noting that one of the other songs in this poll, "The Dumpling Song," received the all-time *lowest* average rating, 3.018, easily beating out the previous holder of that title, "The Sound of the Atom Splitting" at 3.638. My new poll for the week ahead lists all of the Pet Shop Boys standard music videos and asks you to select up to three that you believe have become most "dated," or have "aged" most badly. (You may choose fewer than three if you wish, but no more than that.) So please mull this over and, when you're ready, make your selections right there on my home page. My new poll for the week ahead deals with PSB in relation to one of my other favorite artists, the Beatles. One of my regular site visitors, Tom Haridon, was wondering, if the Boys were to record a remake of one of the songs on the hugely successful Beatles hits anthology "1" (which was released for the holiday season in 2000), which song would you most like for them to cover? So please take a few moments to check out the choices listed right there on my home page and make your choice. And thanks to Tom for suggesting this most intriguing question. Thanks as well to everyone who voted in last week's survey! I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead. If you observe the holiday, I wish you a very, very Merry Christmas!
