From psbfan at geowayne.com Thu Mar 3 20:15:42 2016 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Thu, 3 Mar 2016 20:15:42 -0800 Subject: [Introspective] Poll ends soon on PSB collaborating with Jarre Message-ID: Hey there! Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last full day of my current poll, which asks how you feel about the recent news that the Pet Shop Boys have collaborated with French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre on a track on his next album. If you haven't voted yet, please take a moment to visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and make your choice from the options provided right there on my home page. On Sunday I will end this poll, post the final results, and start a new survey for the week ahead. (But those of you who tend to vote early should note that I will almost certainly be a little later than usual this weekend ending this poll and launching the new one. A personal commitment will probably prevent me from making the usual "switch" and updates until two to four hours later than I normally do. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience.) Thanks to everyone who has already voted! And I hope you all have a fabulous weekend! And the response that received the most votes was: * "I'm not a fan of Jarre, but I welcome news of PSB collaborating and releasing a new track with him nonetheless," picked by 41.1% of the voters. My new poll for the week ahead backs away once again from pending releases to something even more speculative. I'm wondering whether you would like for the Boys at some point to record and release an entire album (or at least most of an album) in one of several different musical styles that so far they haven't much dealt with -- and, if so, which you would most prefer. Thanks so much to Tan Sam for suggesting this question! Thanks as well to everyone who voted in last week's survey! And I hope you all have a marvelous week ahead! It's not often that the top choice in my polls earns not merely a plurality of the votes but a clear majority, but that's what the outcome was this time around! And that top choice was: * "No, I would not like for them to put out an album in *any* of these styles," picked by 58.2% of the voters. As we wait for some new PSB music to be released later this week (the single of "The Pop Kids," including remixes and two new bonus songs), my new poll for the week ahead instead looks to the past and asks which of various Pet Shop Boys shows you most regret having missed "live." Or, to put it another way, if you could go back into the past to see any live PSB show that you didn't get to see, which one would it be? Thanks so much to Daniel Dannypannic for proposing a poll question quite similar to this, although I've decided to deviate a bit from his original suggestion. (I hope you don't mind, Daniel!) Thanks also to everyone who voted in last week's survey! And I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead! At Casa de KFB, we switched to vinyl only for our home musical enjoyment, and it's fun to crack open records I haven't played in years or decades even. Working for Tower Records in its heydey allowed me to amass quite a collection. There is a vibrancy, energy and originality in those early mixes. More than that, they are sonically incredible! I'm fairly certain it's 100% analog: synths, tape, record. Pumping through my 1200s, JBLs and an 18? sub. Oh, so good. If any of you have the chance or know what I?m talking about, good on you. BONUS: I just made a cool discovery. For as long as I can remember I have owned two copies of this: https://www.discogs.com/Pet-Shop-Boys-Opportunities-Lets-Make-Lots-Of-Money-Dance-Mix/release/109163 . But on one of them, the In the Night side plays the Latin Rascals mix of Opportunities instead! What a trip to discover that now. Just thought I'd share with my favorite internet email list. kfb -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Whereas I don?t think I?ve ever seen a single PSB vinyl record at any place in Eugene or central Oregon, this dealer had tons of them. Good stuff. A lot of records I didn?t have. I pull what I want and ask him how much. He spreads them out in piles and barks, ?$7 for these, $10 for these, and $20 for this one, it?s ?Italian?. Shee, Like Italian?s a big thing. I have the Italian 12? of Paninaro, with the rare Ian Levine mix, and it?s shit. But that?s because Ian Levin was shit and that?s another story. But it had the Discoteca Trouser Enthusiasts Mix, and I absolutely love that mix. I ended up not buying it. I got some others though, including Go West 12", which we inexplicably didn?t have on vinyl, though it was our wedding song (we first danced to the Mings part 1/2 mix!) And then I asked the dealer how much for the Smith?s albums. At some point I'll find the time to tell a couple of stories about expensive sound systems and the PSB. Long story short, people at an audiophile store were very much impressed by the music I was using to test speakers and amplifiers. On the flipside, some of the recordings turned out to be a complete disappointment in terms of quality: I don't know how many of you ever listened to Battleship Potemkin (one of my PSB favs) on a 80.000$ sound system. Well, it's incredibly underwhelming.. :-( PaulDj From psbfan at geowayne.com Sat Mar 19 21:55:27 2016 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2016 21:55:27 -0700 Subject: [Introspective] Final results of poll on PSB live show you most regret having missed Message-ID: <30FCDE5DA58647D2964E9FAA84A1833B@COMP8> The final results are in for my poll this past week, in which I asked my site visitors which Pet Shop Boys (or PSB-related) show that they most regret not having seen "live." Do any of you have opinions on Miranda Sawyer, who is narrating part 4 of the Radio 2 docu which begins Wednesday? Her credits seems laudable but I am not familiar with her. Of course, Francis Barber, who is narrating part 3, and Graham himself I am quite familiar with. Anyone want to share opinions on the new single? *In bits* and *One-hit wonder* are good tracks, but neither is one about which I would say "it should have been a single" or "it deserved to be on the album", as is sometimes the case with b-sides. I was quite taken with The Pop Kids at first, but my enthusiasm has tempered somewhat. Still a very good lead single, I think. Only ten days...
