From psbfan at geowayne.com Thu Aug 4 20:43:38 2016 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Thu, 4 Aug 2016 20:43:38 -0700 Subject: [Introspective] Poll ends soon on literary/historical allusions in PSB lyrics Message-ID: Hey there! Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last full day of my current poll, which asks how you feel about the fact (or at least the presumed fact) that Pet Shop Boys lyrics are unusually rich in literary and historical references and allusions. Like it? Don't like it? Don't care? Disagree? Whatever the case, if you haven't already done so, please take a moment to visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and make your choice from the options provided right there on my home page. On Sunday I will end this poll, post the final results, and start a new survey for the week ahead. Thanks to everyone who has already voted! And I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! Wayne http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm From psbfan at geowayne.com Sat Aug 6 22:06:02 2016 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Sat, 6 Aug 2016 22:06:02 -0700 Subject: [Introspective] Final results of poll on literary/historical allusions in PSB lyrics Message-ID: The final results are in for my poll this past week, in which I asked my site visitors their opinion of the fact that the lyrics of Pet Shop Boys songs presumably employ more literary and historical allusions than most other pop-music lyrics. And the choice that received the largest number of votes -- by far -- was: * "I love the fact that PSB lyrics contain a lot of literary and historical references! It's one of the exceptional things about them; it makes them stand out from the crowd," chosen by a amazing 90.2% of the voters. Well, perhaps it's not really so "amazing." But I don't recall any of my other polls -- certainly not recently -- in which the final outcome was so extremely lop-sided. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and either select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. My new poll for the week ahead concerns the fact that nowadays, perhaps more than ever, people have drawn upon popular music (as opposed to or in addition to religious, classical, and/or more "traditional" music) for two of the most important ceremonies in our experience: weddings and funerals. I'm wondering whether you have used or would want to use Pet Shop Boys music in your own personal wedding or funeral services, and also whether you have taken part in such services for others who have done so. Please take a moment to make your choices from the options provided right there on my home page. And thanks so much to Tan Sam for suggesting this most interesting question! Thanks as well to everyone who voted in last week's survey! And I wish you all a most excellent week ahead! Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last full day of my current poll, which asks whether you have been personally involved in (including as a guest) a wedding or funeral in which the music of the Pet Shop Boys was used as part of the service (not including the wedding *reception*), if you used PSB music in your own wedding ceremony or would want it used (again, the service itself, not the reception), or -- with apologies for the grimness of the subject -- if you would want PSB music played during your own funeral service. And the response that received the most votes was: * "Yes, I would very much like for PSB music to be played at my funeral," chosen by 56.1% of the voters. My new poll for the week ahead was suggested by a site visitor who was wondering whether you, his fellow fans, believe that the Pet Shop Boys should boycott Russia (such as by not touring there) on account of the anti-LGBT stance of that nation's government. So please take a moment to make your choice from the options provided right there on my home page. Thanks so much to Gary Beaven from Nottingham for suggesting this question! And thanks to all of you who voted in last week's survey! I hope you all have a superb week ahead! And the response that received the most votes was: * "No," picked by 47.9% of the voters. By contrast, only 19.1% voted "Yes." My new poll for the week ahead arises from the fact that the Boys formally announced this past week that "Say It to Me" will be the next single from *Super*. I'm simply wondering what you think of this choice. So please take a moment to make your selection from the options provided right there on my home page. And the response that received the most votes was: * "It's a good choice, but not the one I would have picked myself," chosen by 36.9% of the voters. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar, or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. My new poll this week is inspired by my recent addition of "Ego Music" to my list of the very, very few PSB songs I don't like. Taking a cue from that list, regular site visitor Tan Sam suggested that I ask how many PSB songs *you* don't like. Now, when you vote, please remember that I'm asking about Pet Shop Boys *songs*, not specific remixes or other such variations. For instance, I love the song "Liberation" -- it's one of my personal favorites -- but I detest the E-Smoove remixes of it. Since they're remixes, however, they don't count. So when you determine your own "dislike list" for this survey, please count only those PSB songs that you simply don't like any which way, in *any* version. And thanks so much for the great suggestion, Sam! Thanks as well to everyone who voted in last week's survey! And I hope you all have a great week ahead! Wayne http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm
