Yes, because you had to wait till page 45/46 of that particular issue
before you found headlines about atheists suing over crucifixes and
meat-eaters being banned from giving blood.

As for why it's important? Fundamental was pretty much about the
erosion of privacy and the rise of the Big Brother state. The Mail on
Sunday is the type of right-wing Fox-News-esque newspaper that would
champion that, as well as legislation against minorities, gays, asylum
seekers etc.
