i would think that since the essence of art is the expression of an idea, 
perhaps the artist might be allowed to express whatever they want, be it 
political, emotional or otherwise?  some of the greatest art of the last fifty 
years was incredibly political.  if a person has some celebrity and can use 
their popularity to champion a cause or bring more awareness to that cause, 
then more power to them.  the line between garbage playing a protest show and 
being rage against the machine is far from thin.
