From psbfan at geowayne.com Sat Apr 2 22:13:16 2016 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Sat, 2 Apr 2016 22:13:16 -0700 Subject: [Introspective] Final results of poll on buying "Super" and "The Pop Kids" Message-ID: <4AF8683F9E7B48248444EA2E534C3DFD@COMP8> The final results are in for my survey this past week, in which I asked my site visitors whether they had bought (or were definitely planning to buy) the new Pet Shop Boys album "Super" and/or its first single, "The Pop Kids" -- and, if so, in which formats. And the choice that received the most votes was: * "The album "Super" in CD format," selected by 73.2% of the voters. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar, or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. With the release of "Super" a couple days ago, it shouldn't come as a surprise that my next several polls will concern it and its tracks in one way or another. I want to give everyone a little more time to acquire and "absorb" the album before I ask most of those questions, but my new poll for the week ahead is one that I feel fairly safe in asking right off the bat. I'm wondering how you think it compares in terms of overall quality with its immediate predecessor, "Electric" (also produced by Stuart Price). So please make your choice from the options provided right there on my home page. (And, by the way, I do offer an "I really can't say" option for those of you who haven't yet heard one or both of the albums, but if you have reason to believe that you *will* be able to hear "Super" before next Sunday, please hold off on voting until you've indeed had a chance to listen to the album.) Thanks to everyone who voted in last week's survey! And I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead! I'm no Trump fan but I realized that the Pets knew this day would come -- it must be obvious. I found most songs are Super and a couple are not. I also find that with other albums. I can't help but compare it to the "new" Star Wars movie. It, too, went back to the original formula (some say back to the exact formula), but it was still fun experience. The new albums has some bangers for sure and I'm definitely grooving. The one big difference is less lyrics. I find that so strange since I've loved the lyrics over the years. Of course, I went to the sound, but loved the irony on the words. This album seemed less ironic, less tongue-in-cheek than the stuff I love the most. I've been surprised by the lack of reviews of the album on this group (but I have to issue the annual lament that nobody seems to be in the group any more -- how many people *are* left???). For my part I'm really liking Super! I'm very much looking forward to seeing some of these tracks live. I'm enjoying "Twenty-something" a lot -- it's catty but classy in the same vein as "Your early stuff" and even "Yesterday when I was mad." I've only heard the album like twenty times :-) so it's too early to really rank it, but I'm not at all disappointed. Although I turned 38 last month, "The pop kids" still makes me feel like I'm discovering this band all over again in 1993 when I stumbled across the Very/Relentless clear flexible case and bought it just because it looked cool. Happy you guys are still around too. Does anyone remember Neil's crazy stalker Lydia circa 2007 who derailed so many good conversations with her downright bizarre talk? She signed as "Mrs. Lydia Tennant". My first thoughts about the album were similar - phoned it in/winged it, less lyrics, lazy lyrics, less mood. But "The Dictator Decides" still has interesting, profound and critical lyrics and "Undertow" still gives me the kind of butterflies I got from "Heart", "So Hard" and "More Than a Dream". That's how I know this is another legitimately good PSB album. Oops, not good but SUPER! Zvonko On Thu, Apr 7, 2016 at 5:00 AM, Bill Cash wrote: > Aww come on. And the song that received the most votes was: * "Burn," chosen by 32.3% of the voters. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and either select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. As promised, my new poll for the week ahead is the latest edition of my ongoing "Rating Project," in which I'm asking you to rate all of the songs on "Super" on a scale of 0 to 10 as they compare to all other PSB songs, in which 0 means "one of the very worst PSB songs," 5 means "an average PSB song," and 10 equals "one of their very best songs." So please take a few moments to mull this over and make your selections right there on my home page. In the meantime, thanks to everyone who voted in last week's survey. (X2 records) The opening single ?The Pop Kids? sounds pretty much like the Pet Shop Boys did in the 1990s. Well, that?s how it?s supposed to sound. Neil Tennant starts off by recalling the 1990s with students going out every night and quoting the best bits of lyrics. This collection is full of the same pulsating keyboards, gentle vocals and doubtless Tennant?s knowingly raised eyebrow just off frame. Arguably, if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it. If you like the PSB you will probably like this, though it?s unlikely to win any new converts. http://ca.blouinartinfo.com/news/story/1378159/6-must-hear-new-albums-sixxam-pj-harvey-pet-shop-boys-more The Messenger Pet Shop Boys, " Super" (x2 Records)- Most of their contemporaries may have fallen by the wayside since the Pet Shop Boys made their vinyl debut in 1984 with "West End Girls" but Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe still soldier on regardless, and the duo's second album with producer Stuart Price captures their distinctive brand of synthpop at its timeless and elegant best. "Burn" and "The Pop Kids" capture PSB at their most commercial, but Tennant also finds time for a little intellectual reflection with the haunting "Sad Robot World" and "The Dictator Decides," which explores the troubled psyche of a world weary 21st century despot. http://www.messengernewspapers.co.uk/leisure/music_reviews/14421493.CD_reviews___Diana_Jones__Pet_Shop_Boys__Pete_Lashley__Red_Jasper/ Is Pet Shop Boys? new Super album, well, super? ...Thankfully, for the rest of us, decorum is recovered by The Pop Kids,...The first half is as reliable as political promises...Sadly, too many Opportunities here are missed ones...That said, Super is a grower...but any album judged against such a magnificent back catalogue as the Pet Shop Boys? has much to live up to. https://tomhocknell.wordpress.com/2016/03/30/is-pet-shop-boys-new-super-album-well-super/ Washington Blade The Boys are back ...?SUPER? is caught in a vice between the sometimes harsh realities of life and the freedom and release that losing yourself on the dance floor can provide. Where that album was more dance, this one is more pop, harking back to the group?s literate, melancholic best. It still pumps, of course, from country-tinged opener ?Happiness? to the penultimate ?Burn? (?We?re gonna burn this disco down before the morning comes!?), but there?s always room for witty, lyrical songwriting. ?The Dictator Decides? and nostalgic single ?The Pop Kids? are cracking examples of the latter. Super is the aptly named switch brain off/switch body on culmination of that. This is the most banger-filled thing they have done, from '70s disco and the chrome-filled '80s to glo-stick fields and sunset-to-dawn clubs "on the continent". The lyrics mostly turn to remembering youth, celebrating its freedom or, with light wistfulness, that period in your 20s or 30s when you think you have to make a choice between living and growing up. Buoyant synths light up Say It To Me; temple-throbbing keyboard bass presages vamping chords in Burn; Groovy matches pure New York underground disco with touches of Yello, then explodes; Happiness cheekily puts a country music melodic hook over a club-for-cruisers groove and squelchy keys; Pop Kids is the duo reviving their own early years; and Inner Sanctum goes northern grey sky propulsive. And the song that earned the highest average rating is: * "Burn," which received an average rating of 7.911 out of 10. And the song that earned the lowest average rating is: * "Pazzo!" for which the average rating turned out to be 4.741. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. You may also wish to visit my overall "Rating Project" page to see how the "Super" songs stack up against every other PSB song in voter ratings. For instance, "Burn" ended up placed at #17 amongst the Boys' songs. My new poll for the week ahead continues my focus on "Super" for at least one more week. But this time I'm not asking so much work of you. ;-) Instead, I would simply like you to indicate how you think "Super" compares overall in general terms to the other PSB studio albums. Is it their all-time best? Their all-time worst? Or somewhere in-between? So please ponder this and, when you're ready, make your choice right there on my home page. Meanwhile, thanks to everyone who voted in last week's survey! I really appreciate it! And I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead! Thanks so much, Zvonko. You definitely took my ears & mind to a better place. This BBC2 series was great and was very enjoyable. Lots of great reminders and inside looks into the PSB & those who know them. While listening, two thoughts came to my mind that I had to share with the group: 1. Rent was originally a punk song? Has anyone heard that version? 2. I thought Bilingual was ahead of its time. The PSB say in the interview they deliberately avoided repeating themselves and avoided what was 'popular' at the time. I've wonder if that impacted their 'popularity' in the mainstream. I think that was obvious to us. We know they loved 'mixing it up' and did it so easily. I've been torn for a long time about that fact. I've always wanted everyone to enjoy the fun, but deep lyrics, and the killer beats. But I've also loved it for myself and the fans on Intro. We are "in" on a great secret, a great band who makes great music. We're so fortunate!! Have you noticed that the PSB are counter-culture, too? They follow their voices and passion. I respect it! Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last full day of my current poll, which asks your opinion of the Pet Shop Boys' most recent album "Super" in terms of its relative overall quality compared to their other studio albums. If you haven't voted yet, please take a moment to visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and make your choice from the options provided right there on my home page. On Sunday I will end this poll, post the final results, and launch a new survey for the week ahead. Thanks to everyone who has already voted! And I wish you all a marvelous weekend! The 43-year-old DJ was inspired to create music as a youngster by learning the 'I Feel For You' hitmaker's vast catalogue of tracks and recalled a meeting with his idol - who tragically died on Thursday (24.04.16) at his Paisley Park estate . He said: "I taught myself, I listened to Prince a lot, I was sitting in my room learning the chords of his songs and from that point I learned how to produce. I met Prince in Miami, he just showed up and played, it was totally random. Looking back now, when it happened it was completely unannounced. He just walked on stage and started playing with only 200 people there. That's the kind of person he was." MK - who hails from Detroit and whose real name is Marc Kinchen - just released upbeat house track 'Piece of Me' featuring favoured Rudimental collaborator Becky Hill and is busy finishing up his summer album, which is yet to be named, in time for festival season. He'll be taking the UK dance calendar by storm this year with sets at We Are FSTVL, Park Life, and SW4 to name a few, but MK is also excited about recently re-teaming with his old pals and electronic duo the Pet Shop Boys. Speaking about remixing their song 'Can You Forgive Her?' in 1993 and being approached again this year to work his magic on 'The Pop Kids', he said: "That was one of my favourite remixes I did in the nineties. And when they asked me, I was like, 'Yes please!' I jumped to it. Even before I was producing, I always listened to the Pet Shop boys. "I forget how it was back in the nineties but this year their promoter got in touch with me, and he thought it would be a cool thing to have me remix the Pet Shop Boys again. I heard the song and I loved it." ____________________________________________________________ StyleBistro Her Dress Dropped Jaws At The Met Gala http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/5724bdcf62db93dce0448st02vuc From psbfan at geowayne.com Sat Apr 30 22:06:11 2016 From: psbfan at geowayne.com (Wayne Studer) Date: Sat, 30 Apr 2016 22:06:11 -0700 Subject: [Introspective] Final results of poll on relative overall quality of "Super" Message-ID: <57258EC3.7080009@geowayne.com> The final results are in for my poll this past week, in which I asked my site visitors their overall general opinion of the Pet Shop Boys' most recent studio album "Super" in terms of its relative quality compared to their other albums. And those results are most unusual in that there turned out to be a tie for first place -- and extremely rare occurrence within my weekly surveys! So the responses that received the most votes were: * "It may not be their best, but I think it's one of their better albums" AND * "I think it's pretty much an 'average' PSB album, with about as many other PSB albums that are better as ones that aren't as good," each of which was selected by 35.3% of the voters. To see the complete results, please visit my "Commentary" site at http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm and select one of the "Past Survey Results" options in the top navigation bar or click the appropriate link on my "What's New?" page. My new poll for the week ahead is something of a rerun of a question that I asked as recently as December 2013. But it makes perfect sense to ask again in the wake of "Super." Previously I asked voters how they felt about Neil's idea that the then-recent "Electric" might be the first in a possible trilogy of PSB albums produced by Stuart Price. Now that two-thirds of that possible trilogy is complete and you've heard how it turns out for two albums rather than just one, I'm asking whether you think Price should indeed produce the next PSB studio album, thereby making this trilogy a reality? So please take a moment to make your choice from the options provided right there on my home page. In the meantime, thanks to everyone who voted in last week's survey! And I hope you all have a fantastic week ahead! Wayne http://www.geowayne.com/psbhtml.htm
